Yuri Landman: ‘Homeswinger’ Guitar Workshop

Yuri Landman is an instrument inventor, musicologist and experimental luthier to Sonic Youth, Liars,
Lightning Bolt, Blonde Redhead and Enon amongst others. Yuri’s creations look more like multi-string
crossbows than regular instruments, their sounds derived from string resonance and microtonality based
on the no wave aesthetics of Glenn Branca and the microtonal consonant theory developed by Harry Partch.
In this workshop, participants will build and take home their own copy of the Moodswinger guitar,
originally built for Aaron Hemphill of Liars. The Moodswinger is a 3rd bridge guitar which produces a strange scary multiphonic sound, similar to a piano, koto, clock, bell or woodblock depending on the position of thethird bridge. The Moodswinger’s design, complete with a screwdriver-like rod between strings, makes it easier to elaborate on Sonic Youth’s early investigations with unusual tunings and screwdrivers.
