One of the great fi lms of the silent era featuring a suitably intense new score by sonic innovators KTL aka. Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O)))) and Peter Rehberg (Pita). Set on New Year’s Eve, three drunkards evoke the legend of the phantom carriage, which tells that the last person to die in the year, if he is a great sinner, will spend the following year driving the carriage that picks up the souls of the dead. With magical special effects, director Victor Sjostrom evokes a world of shadows and crafts a tale of repentance and a love
wasted through alcohol.
Peter Rehberg and Stephen O’Malley must rank as the ideal soundtrackers to a fi lm of this ilk; the duo brilliantly accompanying the grainy, macabre tone of the fi lm without ever trying to steal the spotlight. Black Sunday is a horror film night at the Black Box café. A mix of early classics of the genre and hard to find, overlooked gems.
