Even by the standards of underground and avantgarde music, Jandek is a man who has pushed the notion of deliberate obscurity to the outer limits. From the bluesy, atonal music and haunting lyrics, to the artist’s steadfast seclusion and sheer longevity, everything about this man intrigues. Twenty-five years, 34 albums, and even the simple detail of the man’s real name is a mystery.

Filmmaker and Jandek enthusiast Chad Friedrich’s documentary Jandek on Corwood examines the enigma that is Jandek and takes a long look at both his music and what this artist’s purposefully obscure approach to his work says about him and his audience.

One of the first Moog synth musicians, Perrey blended the instrument with his then groundbreaking looping techniques to create a uniquely comic
take on the future.

For more than 50 years, Perrey has been stirring up good moods with his “Music for Laughs and Smiles”. Perrey has worked with Pierre Schaeffer, Gershon Kingsley, Edith Piaf, Walt Disney and Angelo Badalamenti and has been a huge influence on countless later electronic musicians.

In the fifties Pierre Henry provoked scandal by inventing Musique Concrète with Pierre Schaeffer. Together the two revolutionised the concept of music by defying expectations of melody and rhythm. Music was no longer written with notes on a score for instrumentalists but was based on sounds and noises from our environment, collected, edited and transformed by machines.

Today, avant garde musicians, electronic artists and DJs alike claim to be followers of his fabulous work in fashioning sound. In Pierre Henry: The Art Of Sounds, we follow Henry as he brandishes his boom mics through the Coulée Verte, Paris, in search of the “perfect” sound. As the journey unfolds we are brought back forty years as people are leaving the “Concert Couché” (“lying down concert”), with initial reactions from the audience.

Preceded by ‘Le Candidat’ by Gérald Belkin, scored by Pierre Henry.

’33 Seagulls’ is a short documentary about homeless artist Robert Bodel. The film is a personal and intimate view of a 60 year old man who has spent his life continually drawing. He is a man completely removed from society and the world, he knows fi ve people and rarely talks to any of them. Robert is homeless and currently living in a hostel, he is a ghost of a man, quiet and remote, yet gentle and charming.

The film charts several days spent with Robert following him in his daily pilgrimage to a little park in East Belfast that is his sanctuary from the world. We also see him draw and talk about his life in his own disarming way. it is Robert’s art which is often the dominant character in the film, all abstract works, each meticulously drawn on the back of little envelopes. Robert’s art is tiny and obsessive in detail matched with vivid colour schemes, all this from a man who has “never really seen anyone else’s drawings”. His art presents a truly unique and strange vision, much of which has been captured in this documentary.

A celebration / commemoration of the institution that is Catalyst Arts. An installation and performance by
Barry Cullen to re-examine some of the Catalyst archive. Revisiting pieces created in and for the galleries’ various sites. Warping their meaning through remixing. Allowing a peep at the past after it has been altered by the passage of time and a variety of editing processes. Hands-on cut n’ paste and digital sampling will be
used to create newfrom old. There may be harmony and dissonance in the ways older works are approached and (re-)presented. The finished piece may not depict history accurately.

Guerilla filmmaker Brendan Toller unleashes “I Need That Record, a documentary feature examining why over 3000 independent record stores have closed across the U.S. in the past decade. Greedy record labels, media consolidation, homogenized radio, big box stores, E-commerce, shoddy “stars” pushed by big money, and the digital revolution all pose threats on the very well being of our favorite record stores and the music industry at large. Will these stores die? Will they survive?

Featuring: Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Ian MacKaye of Dischord Records/Fugazi/Minor Threat, activist/author Noam Chomsky, Mike Watt of the Minutemen, Chris Frantz of Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club, guitar composer Glenn Branca, BP Helium from Of Montreal, and many indie record stores across the U.S.
